With an eye toward the future of the franchise, the Penguins signed a pair of prospects in March. Early in the month, the team signed its fifth round pick from the 2017 NHL Draft, Jan Drozg to a three-year, entry-level contract. A 19-year-old native of Slovenia, Drozg plays for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Shawinigan Cataractes. He had 50 points during the 2017-18 season and registered 62 through 60 games this season. He's expected to play for the Penguins' American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton next season.
On March 11, Pittsburgh added to its prospect pool by signing undrafted college free agent Jake Lucchini. The 23-year-old spent four seasons at Michigan Tech University and was captain of the team this past season. He concluded his collegiate career with 104 points in 164 games. Although undrafted, he is already familiar with the Penguins organization as he attended the team's prospect development camp in June 2018.
