The Pirates traded catcher Jacob Stallings to the Miami Marlins in December in exchange for three players: pitcher Zach Thompson, outfield prospect Connor Scott, and pitching prospect Kyle Nicolas. Stallings experienced a breakthrough campaign with the Pirates in 2019 and has been the team's starting catcher ever since. He's among the best defensive catchers in the league and an above-average hitter who registered a .246 batting average and 11.5 percent walk rate last season.
Thompson is the only one of the three players acquired by the Pirates with MLB experience. The 6-foot-7, right-handed pitcher appeared in 26 games and made 14 starts as a rookie last year with the Marlins. He produced a win-loss record of 3-7 to go along with a 3.24 earned run average (ERA) and 66 strikeouts through 75 innings pitched.
Scott was the 16th best prospect in the Marlins’ minor league organization. He's an above-average defender who recorded a .276 batting average in addition to 10 home runs and 14 stolen bases through 435 plate appearances at High-A. Nicolas, meanwhile, is a former second-round pick of the Marlins who registered a 4.18 ERA through 21 appearances at High-A and Double-A in 2021.
